Healthy Living During and After Work

healthy professionalsStaying active during and after work is incredibly important. Taking every opportunity to move your body is key. With body tech like Fitbit and Lumo Lift, tracking your progress is easy, accessible and synced with your smartphone. Let’s look at ways to stay active by breaking down your day into four parts: morning, afternoon, evening and night. As with any exercise or dieting, be sure to consult a heath professional before beginning a program.

Morning

After a good night of sleep, seven to eight hours, get moving. All you need to do is take 10 to 15 minutes after you’re awake to do the exercise of your choosing and now the day is kicked into high gear. Follow your morning exercise with a healthy breakfast. Save the bacon, eggs and pancakes for a weekend treat.

If you have the ability walk or bike to work, take it! Bike sharing companies are on the rise with companies like Citi Bike in New York and Divvy in Chicago, which is great because you don’t even have to buy a bike, worry about it getting stolen or take it in for a tune up. Win, win if you ask me.

Okay, you’ve arrived at the office. Did you drive? If so, park at end of the lot and talk a stroll. Does your building have stairs? If yes, take the stairs. A couple of flights won’t hurt. If you work on the 10th floor maybe get off the elevator at the 7th floor and climb the last three floors the old fashion way. Little by little, add an additional flight in because if you want to make change happen in the body, you’ve got to change your routine.

Afternoon

Avoid sitting for too long. Take a break every hour to stand up and move around. If you have the space, stretch. Healthy snacking is a great way to stay energized as well, so be sure to keep a mix of vegetables and hummus near by.

When the lunch whistle blows, avoid fast food. It will only weigh you down and negate all your hard work for the day. After lunch take a 10-minute walk. Not only will it keep you moving its a great way to clear you head before taking on the second half of your day.

Evening

The clock has struck five and your about to head home. You’ve been closing deals left and right. If you ask me, you deserve to go home, throw on a pair of sweats and queue up Netflix. Take a couple of flights by foot on the way down. Stroll back across the parking lot to your car or hop on your Divvy if you chose the two wheel option. If you took the ankle express, all aboard. Final stop, home. Opt for a healthy dinner with a walk afterward. Taking a walk after a meal is great for your metabolism and your over health. As the saying goes, a body in motion stays in motion.

Night

Sleep. The most important part of you day. This is when the battery gets recharged. With today’s fast paced life seven to eight hours may seem like like an impossible goal, but it is definitely something to shoot for. Be sure to make up for lost sleep on Saturday and Sunday morning. Speaking of the weekend, wasn’t there mention of bacon, eggs and pancakes?
